Training coupled with a drone provides for a tech’s safe self-rescue

A tower technician in Biloxi, Miss. rappelled safely to the ground yesterday evening after being stuck in a man basket for a few hours after a crane lost its hydraulic system.

While performing maintenance work on the Alpha Media radio tower, the unnamed tech got stranded 140 feet up in the air.

The tower is located just behind WLOX’s TV station and a WLOX drone was used to take rescue rope up to the worker. He then rappelled down safely after being in the air for about three hours.

The tech told WLOX staffers that he’s rappelled down from towers before as part of training, but this was the first time he had to do it to rescue himself.

A request for additional information to WLOX last night was not immediately returned.
