Isolating down conductor is costly, inconsequential

Some grounding specifications require a copper ground conductor to be attached to the lightning rod and run down the tower and bonded to the system ground. Other standards require the vertical conductor to be isolated from the tower. Both requirements have no known protection benefits during a lightning strike and just add to the project cost.
