Crown Castle Inc., a leading communications tower company, announced a significant leadership change that is effective today. Steven J. Moskowitz will take on the roles of President and Chief Executive Officer and join the company’s Board of Directors. This appointment concludes an extensive search led by the CEO Search Committee and the Board and facilitated by global executive search firm Russell Reynolds.
Moskowitz brings a wealth of experience to his new role at Crown Castle. He previously served as CEO of Centennial Towers and NextG Networks and had a significant tenure at American Tower Corporation. His leadership at American Tower, where he served as EVP and President of the U.S. Tower business, saw the company triple its site count and quintuple its adjusted EBITDA, solidifying its position as a leader in the U.S. wireless infrastructure sector.
Under Moskowitz’s direction, Centennial Towers became a prominent provider of build-to-suit cell sites in Latin America, enhancing the company’s footprint in Brazil, Colombia, and Mexico. His tenure at NextG Networks was marked by substantial revenue growth and the doubling of the company’s asset base, which culminated in its acquisition by Crown Castle in 2012.
P. Robert Bartolo, Chair of Crown Castle’s Board of Directors, expressed confidence in Moskowitz’s capabilities, highlighting his comprehensive experience in both domestic and international tower and small cell solutions. The Board is optimistic that Moskowitz will continue to advance the company’s strategic initiatives and operational reviews, ultimately driving enhanced value for shareholders.
Anthony J. Melone, who has been serving as the Interim President and CEO since January 2024, will transition to the role of Special Advisor to the President and CEO until May 31, 2024, to ensure a smooth handover. Melone will continue to contribute to Crown Castle as a member of its Board.
This leadership transition comes at a crucial time for Crown Castle, facing both opportunities and challenges. These include ongoing strategic reviews and potential corporate actions, along with external pressures such as a proxy fight initiated by co-founder Ted Miller and scrutiny from activist investors. Moskowitz’s appointment is seen as a strategic move to bolster Crown Castle’s leadership amidst these dynamic conditions, as the company aims to fortify its market position and operational effectiveness.
