Tracy was selected as a finalist for Best Live Speaker based on his work during 2025-26, specifically in wireless and healthcare engagements, and was also shortlisted for Best Storyteller — recognition that reflects a speaking style built not on polished performance but on decades of hard-won, real-life experience. Several prominent figures in the professional speaking industry recommended that Tracy apply — a detail that says as much as the nomination itself.

The nickname “The Grampion” did not emerge from a branding consultant or a marketing campaign. It came from his grandson Wes, who decided one day that Jim Tracy was not merely a Grandpa, and not merely a Champion. Without missing a beat, Wes declared a new title: The Grampion. The name stuck immediately, and Tracy has since built an entire personal brand around it, hosting a weekly podcast, The Grampion, that has become a platform for his views on leadership, culture, generational harmony, and faith.
It is a fitting identity for a man who was raised by Traditionalists, born a Baby Boomer, raised both Gen X and Millennial children, and is now a Grampion to 18 grandchildren spanning Gen Z and Gen Alpha. From Small-Town South Dakota to CEO
Tracy’s story does not begin in a boardroom. It begins in rural South Dakota, where he grew up the sixth of eight children and learned to weld — developing the work ethic and blue-collar grit that would eventually take him to some of the most remote and challenging project sites on earth. He was working as a welder in remote locations when he fell in love and enrolled at the University of South Dakota alongside his new wife, Sarah. Together, they have built a family, a business legacy, and worked through more than 45 years of change and growth.
From those humble beginnings, Tracy built Legacy Telecommunications, Inc., serving as its Chief Executive and founding partner for 23 years. Under his leadership, Legacy grew into the leading provider of communications infrastructure services to the Pacific Northwest, with Tracy accumulating extensive experience leading teams through build-outs in remote and hostile environments across the Western US and other locations.
Legacy Telecommunications was ultimately acquired by the private equity arm of a publicly traded company, with Tracy leading the brand transition into what is now Ontivity — part of Enertech Holdings — where he has continued to serve as an Executive Advisor. Along the way, he has founded, built, scaled, bought, and sold multiple businesses across three industries, and has testified before the United States Congress.
His credentials read like the résumé of a man who has never been content to do just one thing: tower climber, welder, teacher, instrument-rated jet pilot, snow cat operator, safety trainer, rigger, auctioneer, counselor, and working dog handler. A Builder of Industries, Not Just Towers
What separates Tracy from many successful entrepreneurs is the degree to which he turned his energy outward to build the industry around him, not just his own company. His record of voluntary service to the wireless infrastructure sector is matched by very few.
As a past Board Chairman of NATE: The Communications Infrastructure Contractors Association, Tracy helped steer the organization that serves as the unified voice for tower erection, maintenance, and service companies across the United States. NATE is widely known as the standard-bearer for tower safety, and Tracy brought to its leadership the same passion for worker well-being that defined his years running crews in some of the most unforgiving terrain on earth.
As Founding Past President and Board of Governors member of the National Wireless Safety Alliance, Tracy was present at the organization’s creation, which established the industry’s credentialing and safety training standards — a body whose work continues to protect the lives of tower technicians every single day.
Perhaps most personally meaningful, Tracy founded the Tower Family Foundation and has served as its President and Director since its inception. The Foundation exists for one of the most sobering purposes in the industry — extending financial and educational assistance to the families of tower workers who have been severely injured, permanently disabled, or killed on the job. In an industry where the stakes of elevated work are measured in human lives, Tracy has made it his mission to ensure that no family faces those consequences alone.
Inducted Into the Wireless Hall of Fame — The Industry’s Highest Honor
Before London came calling, the wireless infrastructure industry had already rendered its own verdict on Tracy’s contributions — and it could not have been more definitive. In 2021, Tracy was inducted into the Wireless History Foundation’s Hall of Fame as part of that year’s class, one of the most selective and prestigious honors the industry bestows.
The Hall of Fame exists to recognize individuals whose vision, leadership, and sustained contributions have fundamentally shaped the wireless world.
It is the kind of recognition that is not applied for or campaigned for. It is conferred by peers who have watched a career unfold over decades and concluded that its impact has been permanent. For a man who started as a welder in rural South Dakota and rose to the chairman’s seat at NATE, the induction was a full-circle moment that the industry’s historians deemed worthy of permanent record.
That honor was followed in 2022 by the Bill Carlson Lifetime Service Award from NATE — the association’s highest recognition for sustained lifetime contributions to the industry — and in 2024 by the Business ICON of Idaho Award, cementing Tracy’s standing as one of the state’s most consequential entrepreneurs.
In 2025 he added the International Impact Award to the shelf. Taken together, the four honors represent a sweep of recognition spanning the wireless industry, its leading trade association, the broader business community, and the international speaking world.
Up in the Air, Not on Towers, but literally
Away from the tower industry, Tracy has logged serious time in the cockpit. He holds an instrument rating with more than 2,000 hours of flight time in high-performance, complex, multi-engine, and jet aircraft, and has been trained by military fighter pilots. He rekindled his passion for flying at age 47 and went on to begin piloting jets at 62 — flying his Eclipse 500 jet from his home base in Boise, Idaho, to speaking engagements across the country.
His love of aviation connects directly to his faith. Tracy serves as West Regional Director of Pilots for Christ International, a non-denominational service organization that helps people in need travel via private aircraft while promoting the Gospel through flying — a ministry that combines two of Tracy’s defining passions into a single act of service.
Faith as Foundation
Faith is not a side note in Jim Tracy’s life — it is the load-bearing wall. On his own website, Tracy states plainly: “I am a follower of Jesus, and I am unashamed.” He cites Acts 20:24 and Matthew 6:33 as his life verses. Tracy is actively involved in The Mission House, a Bible-based, Christ-centered transformation program designed to help men overcome life-dominating sin by establishing a relationship with God. His charitable work, his nonprofit leadership, and his speaking all draw from the same source — a conviction that the lessons of faith and history are not constraints on how he engages the culture, but the very tools he uses to do it.
