A 21-year-old Illinois tower tech died Friday after falling from a cell tower in Illinois while he was working on a Verizon installation east of Joliet as a member of a four-man crew.
The structure is owned by SBA Communications.
The St. Joseph man was reportedly at the 100-foot level of the 105-foot structure when he fell to the ground, according to individuals knowledgeable of the accident.
Michael “Trey” Wagner was on the SBA monopine located behind the Church of Olympia Fields off of Western Ave. in Olympia Fields when he suddenly fell for unknown reasons at approximately 3:00 p.m.
He was employed by Windy City Tower of Wauconda, IL
A spokesperson for Windy City Tower said that OSHA was contacted immediately following the incident.
The company brought in counselors this morning to support employees with their grief and loss of a member of their extended family.
Windy City Tower was founded in 2005 by Brian Szubinski and is an active participant in many safety programs such as the NATE STAR Initiative.
According to OSHA’s database, the company has not had any safety citations.
Wagner was the second industry fatality this year.
