Rock excavation unit pricing can only be accurately offered if the contractor has detailed soil borings identifying the levels and type of rock that will be encountered on the site so that he can identify the equipment required. This unit pricing is typically requested when the project engineer knows that the contractor will already be required to excavate rock and wants to ensure that if a greater amount is found while excavating the foundation, road or compound area, a baseline unit price will be available for a change order request.
