Installation Information
Anchor Protection Systems
Each manufacturer will provide its own set of installation procedures in addition to the owner’s specifications. You will be required to drill a hole, typically 6” to 8” x 6’ to 8’ for each anode. A two-man gas hole digger at an average rental of $72.00 per day will assist in the excavation. If a skid loader with an auger attachment is available at an average rental of $194.00 per day, it can cut your installation time by 1/3 to 1/2. The sacrificial anode will be placed in the hole and it will be necessary to exothermically weld the anode’s lead to the anchor shaft’s fan plate. The anode comes enclosed in a cotton bag surrounded by a gypsum, bentonite and sodium sulfate or similar mixture to assist in the activation of current flow and ensure that moisture remains about the area of the anode. Many specifications will require you to fill the hole with approximately 5 gallons of water prior to filling in the excavated soils. The contractor may be requested to test the system and provide anode current and anchor potentials.
If a test head is required, install the head’s attached cell probe in a separate hole approximately 6’ below grade and route the attached wire a minimum of 12” below ground to the point where it exits in the vicinity of the anchor shaft. Attach the test head above ground on the anchor with the supplied attachment hardware. Anode leads will be attached to the test head and will not be required to be thermowelded to the fan plate. Provide potential measurement testing per manufacturer’s procedures.
The pricing below is the average charge, while on site, for a subcontractor to install sacrificial anode systems. Prices will vary depending upon site conditions, crew capability, location and client specifications. Material is not included.

Warning!
- Do not climb a guyed tower unless the anchor shafts are totally encased in concrete above ground
- The anchors were recently inspected
- The anchors are dug up and inspected before climbing and show no signs of structural damage due to corrosion
- In addition, do not climb any roof mounted guyed towers until you have carefully checked the anchor shaft in the pitch pan as well as below the roof structure. Many people have been seriously injured or killed as a result of anchor shaft failures.
